Target Information
Epithelial cell adhesion molecule may function as a physical homophilic interaction molecule between intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) and intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) at the mucosal epithelium, providing an immunological barrier as a first line of defense against mucosal infections. It plays a role in the proliferation and differentiation of embryonic stem cells and upregulates the expression of FABP5, MYC, and cyclins A and E. In mice, this molecule is encoded by the Epcam gene. The functions of EpCAM in mice involve multiple aspects, including cell adhesion, tissue development, tumor progression and immune regulation.
