Target Information

Tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily member 11B functions as a decoy receptor for TNFSF11/RANKL, thus neutralizing its role in osteoclastogenesis. It inhibits osteoclast activation and promotes their apoptosis in vitro. Bone homeostasis appears to rely on the local ratio between TNFSF11 and TNFRSF11B. This receptor may also be involved in preventing arterial calcification and acts as a decoy receptor for TNFSF10/TRAIL, thereby offering protection against apoptosis. The binding of TNFSF10/TRAIL interferes with the inhibition of osteoclastogenesis. In mice, TNFRSF11B primarily regulates bone metabolism, inflammation, immune responses, and cell differentiation and proliferation. The protein it encodes, osteoprotegerin, plays a pivotal role in these processes, particularly in maintaining bone density and preventing bone resorption.
