Target Information
5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), also known as serotonin, is a monoamine neurotransmitter. It plays diverse roles in the body, including mood and emotions, sleep regulation, appetite control, cognition and memory, pain perception, and gastrointestinal function. It is produced in the brainstem's raphe nuclei, enterochromaffin cells in the gastrointestinal tract, and other tissues. Research has shown the that tachycardia induced by 5-HT in the pig does not involve the receptors for some common neurotransmitter substances.
