Target Information
Mouse Bone Morphogenetic Protein 10 (Bmp10) is a peptide growth factor belonging to the TGF-β superfamily, playing a crucial role in cardiovascular development and function. During embryonic development, Bmp10 is predominantly expressed in the ventricular trabecular myocardium of mouse embryos, promoting cardiomyocyte proliferation and heart chamber maturation. Bmp10-deficient mice exhibit severe heart defects, including hypoplastic and thin ventricles with little trabeculation, leading to embryonic lethality. In adult mice, Bmp10 expression is restricted to the right atrium, and its overexpression can result in smaller hearts with reduced ventricular dimensions and thickened ventricular walls. Bmp10 also regulates iron homeostasis, which is essential for maintaining cardiac function. Furthermore, Bmp10 has been shown to protect against heart failure by reducing cardiomyocyte apoptosis and cardiac fibrosis in response to stress. These findings highlight the importance of Bmp10 in both embryonic and postnatal cardiac development and its potential therapeutic applications in cardiovascular diseases.
