Target Information
Chicken Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone Receptor (MC1R) is a G protein-coupled receptor located on the plasma membrane of melanocytes. It plays a crucial role in regulating the production and deposition of melanin, which determines feather color and pigmentation in chickens. MC1R binds to α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), which promotes the production of eumelanin (black/brown pigment), while binding to the Agouti protein increases pheomelanin (red/yellow pigment) and reduces eumelanin. Polymorphisms in the MC1R gene have been extensively studied and are associated with variations in feather color. For example, specific SNPs in the 5'-flanking region of MC1R have been shown to correlate with feather color and egg production in Taihang chickens.
