Target Information

Porcine diamine oxidase (DAO) catalyses the oxidation of diamines in pigs. By oxidizing (adding oxygen) to histamine, DAO helps inactivate and eliminate it from the body, preventing or minimizing potential negative effects of excess histamine. Individuals with low DAO activity might experience histamine intolerance due to the inability to effectively break down dietary histamine. Its increase in blood reflects the intestinal damage and it can be used as a biomarker for evaluating gut function.
