Target Information

For many years, Lactobacillus species have been considered advantageous for the vaginal ecosystem by inhibiting pathogen invasion through the production of organic acids, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), bacteriocin, and other antimicrobial substances. Described for the first time in 1999, Lactobacillus iners is a common component of the vaginal microbiome. Under certain conditions, L. iners acts as a true vaginal symbiont, yet it also appears to function as an opportunistic pathogen.
