Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) are resistant to vancomycin, a standard treatment for infections caused by enterococci. VRE infections typically occur in healthcare environments. The term VRE encompasses various combinations of bacterial species and resistance genes, with Enterococcus faecium exhibiting vanA-type vancomycin resistance being the most clinically significant. This variant is also the most prevalent VRE found among farm animals.
