Target Information
BChE acts as a cholinesterase, meaning it hydrolyzes (breaks down) choline esters. BChE can hydrolyze certain organophosphate insecticides, providing some protective effect against their toxicity. BChE activity levels in the blood can be measured to aid in diagnosing certain neuromuscular disorders, such as myasthenia gravis, where AChE activity is reduced. Horse serum butyrylcholinesterase (Eq-BChE) has been shown to be an effective bio-scavenger for organophosphate toxicity in mice and rhesus monkeys.
