Streptococcus thermophilus, previously known as Streptococcus salivarius subsp. thermophilus, is a gram-positive bacterium and a fermentative facultative anaerobe belonging to the viridans group. Classified as a lactic acid bacterium, S. thermophilus is commonly found in fermented milk products and is typically used in yogurt production, alongside Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus.
