Aquatic animals are used as research models in drug development to support target discovery, screening, efficacy testing and safety evaluation. The advantages of using aquatic animals include their small size, short culture periods, and strong genetic and functional similarities to mammals, such as zebrafish. These characteristics make them ideal models for drug screening.

Aquatic animal models provide efficient, transparent, low-cost, and ethically less burdensome solutions at all stages of drug development, including target discovery, early screening, efficacy validation, toxicity prediction, and delivery studies, and are a key bridge between in vitro screening and mammalian model testing.
Target Discovery: Utilizing gene editing technologies in aquatic animal models to investigate the roles of specific genes or signaling pathways, thereby identifying and validating potential therapeutic targets.
Target Discovery: Utilizing gene editing technologies in aquatic animal models to investigate the roles of specific genes or signaling pathways, thereby identifying and validating potential therapeutic targets.
High-Throughput Screening: Rapid drug screening using multi-well plate formats with embryos or juvenile fish enables the simultaneous evaluation of the efficacy and toxicity of hundreds of candidate compounds.
Efficacy Evaluation: Assess the therapeutic potential of drug candidates by evaluating their ability to reverse, alleviate, or halt disease progression in established aquatic disease models.
PK/PD & Biodistribution: The absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) of drug candidates can be visualized and analyzed using fluorescently labeled compounds and transgenic aquatic models expressing tissue-specific fluorescent markers.
Toxicity Evaluation: Pre-toxicity screening models for aquatic organisms like zebrafish are suitable for various drug toxicity tests.
Drug Delivery Research: Validation of the stability, targeting and release capabilities of different delivery systems using aquatic organism models.
