Target Information
Zilpaterol is a synthetic beta2-adrenergic receptor agonist utilized as a veterinary drug and feed additive to increase the rate of weight gain, improve feed efficiency, and enhance carcass leanness in cattle prior to slaughter. Because it acts as a potent partitioning agent that shifts nutrients from fat to muscle production, it poses food safety concerns regarding residual carryover in animal tissues. Ingestion of zilpaterol residues in beef products can cause adverse cardiovascular and neurological effects in humans, such as tachycardia, tremors, and headaches. Consequently, while permitted with strict withdrawal periods and maximum residue limits (MRLs) in countries like the United States, its use is strictly banned in many other jurisdictions, including the European Union and China.
