Target Information
Tetrodotoxin (TTX) is a potent neurotoxin found primarily in pufferfish, but also in some other aquatic animals like certain species of newts, blue-ringed octopuses, and shellfish. The toxin is produced by symbiotic bacteria living within these animals and is concentrated in their internal organs, particularly the liver and ovaries. TTX is extremely dangerous because it is heat-stable, meaning cooking cannot destroy it, and there is no known antidote. Ingestion of contaminated seafood can lead to rapid and severe poisoning, causing paralysis, respiratory failure, and often death. Strict regulations and professional preparation are required for the safe consumption of pufferfish.
