Target Information
Tetrodotoxin is an incredibly powerful toxin predominantly located in the liver and reproductive organs (gonads) of certain fish species, including pufferfish, globefish, and toadfish (order Tetraodontiformes), as well as in some species of amphibians, octopuses, and shellfish. This toxin acts as a sodium channel blocker, preventing neurons from firing action potentials. It achieves this by binding to the voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve cell membranes, thus blocking the influx of sodium ions essential for the rising phase of an action potential within the neuron.
