Target Information

Concanavalin A (ConA) is a lectin originally extracted from the jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis). It is a homotetramer with each subunit binding a metallic atom. ConA specifically binds to certain structures found in various sugars, glycoproteins, and glycolipids. Its main targets are internal and nonreducing terminal α-D-mannosyl and α-D-glucosyl groups. Research has shown that it causes an increase in sodium permeability and intracellular sodium content of pig lymphocytes.
