Aggrecan (also known as cartilage-specific proteoglycan core protein or chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan 1) is encoded by the porcine AGC gene. Aggrecan is an integral part of the extracellular matrix in cartilaginous tissue. Aggrecan exhibits a unique bottlebrush structure. It plays a crucial role in withstanding compression within cartilage. The multimolecular complex of aggrecan, hyaluronan, and link protein is essential for maintaining cartilage function.
