5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a naturally occurring amino acid and chemical precursor as well as a metabolic intermediate in the biosynthesis of the neurotransmitter serotonin. 5-HTP is produced in the body from the amino acid tryptophan. It serves as an intermediate step in the conversion of tryptophan to serotonin. It is both a drug and a natural component of some dietary supplements.
