Streptococcus iniae is a species of Gram-positive, spherical bacteria within the genus Streptococcus. First isolated from an Amazon freshwater dolphin in the 1970s, S. iniae has become a major fish pathogen in aquaculture operations globally. It can also cause opportunistic infections in humans who are weakened or have compromised immune systems.
