Target Information

Rickettsia prowazekii is a Gram-negative, obligate intracellular coccobacillus within the Rickettsia genus. It is responsible for causing epidemic typhus, which is transmitted by the human body louse. In the United States, R. prowazekii is found endemically in flying squirrels (Glaucomys volans).
