The Capsid (C) protein is a highly basic, structural protein essential for the assembly of the Zika virus nucleocapsid. It functions by binding to the viral positive-sense RNA genome through electrostatic interactions, effectively packaging it into a protective core. Beyond its structural role in virion morphogenesis, Protein C localizes to the host cell nucleus and lipid droplets, where it modulates host pathways, including the inhibition of stress granule formation and induction of apoptosis in neural stem cells.
