Target Information
West Nile Virus (WNV) is an enveloped, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the genus Flavivirus within the family Flaviviridae. Maintained in an enzootic cycle between Culex mosquitoes and birds, it is a prominent neurotropic pathogen capable of spillover transmission to humans and equines, where it can cause West Nile fever or severe neuroinvasive diseases like encephalitis and meningitis. Key targets for serological diagnostics, molecular detection (RT-PCR), and vaccine development include the Envelope (E) glycoprotein, which mediates host cell receptor binding and membrane fusion, and the Non-structural protein 1 (NS1), a glycoprotein secreted by infected cells that plays a major role in immune evasion and viral replication.
