Target Information
Trypanosoma americanum is a historical taxonomic designation for a specific lineage of Trypanosoma theileri, a giant, non-pathogenic, stercorarian flagellate protozoan that commonly infects cattle worldwide. While initially identified as a distinct species after frequently appearing in blood cultures from American cattle, molecular and morphological classification places it under the T. theileri umbrella. The parasite is transmitted to ruminants via the feces of hematophagous vectors, primarily tabanid flies (horseflies and deerflies). It replicates harmlessly in the host's bloodstream as an extracellular trypomastigote, rarely causing clinical disease unless the host is severely immunosuppressed. Key targets for epidemiological surveillance, molecular characterization, and phylogenetic distinction from pathogenic trypanosomes include the highly conserved 18S rRNA gene sequences, internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions, and distinct surface cathepsin L-like cysteine proteases.
