Target Information
Transmissible Gastroenteritis Virus (TGEV) is an enveloped, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the genus Alphacoronavirus within the family Coronaviridae. It targets the gastrointestinal tract of swine, infecting mature enterocytes lining the villi of the small intestine. This results in severe villous atrophy, malabsorption, and acute enteritis. Highly contagious, TGEV causes watery diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration across all porcine age groups, exhibiting a mortality rate approaching 100% in neonatal piglets under two weeks of age.
