Target Information
Porcine Uricase (Urate Oxidase) is a homotetrameric liver enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of uric acid into 5-hydroxyisourate, which is subsequently converted to allantoin.2 While the UOX gene is a non-functional pseudogene in humans and great apes, it remains highly active in swine. Due to its robust uricolytic activity, recombinant porcine uricase is extensively used in biochemical research and as a template for developing PEGylated therapeutic enzymes to treat hyperuricemia and tumor lysis syndrome in humans.
