Target Information
Swine procathepsin L (CTSL) is a lysosomal cysteine protease involved in intracellular protein degradation. CTSL plays important roles in various physiological processes, including skin and hair follicle homeostasis, normal cardiac function, and immune response regulation. In swine, research on CTSL has shown that its expression in cardiovascular diseases is regulated by vitamin D levels. For example, in vitamin D-deficient swine, CTSL expression in the coronary arteries is significantly increased, which may be associated with the development of atherosclerosis . Additionally, CTSL plays a key role in SARS-CoV-2 infection by cleaving and activating the viral spike protein, promoting viral entry into host cells, making it a potential target for COVID-19 prevention and treatment.
