Target Information
Gastrokine-3 (GKN3) in swine is a novel member of the gastrokine family, which are stomach mucus cell-secreted proteins. GKN3 encodes a secreted protein that is highly expressed in the stomach epithelium and likely plays a role in regulating cellular proliferation. It is co-expressed with trefoil factor (Tff)2 in the distal stomach and is associated with a specific mucus neck cell (MNC) subpopulation in the proximal stomach. Overexpression of GKN3 inhibits proliferation in gastric epithelial cell lines, suggesting it may function to restrain epithelial cell growth, particularly in gastric atrophy, a pre-cancerous state.
