Target Information
Swine antibacterial peptide PMAP-23 is a potent host defense peptide active against a broad spectrum of bacteria, including both Gram-positive and Gram-negative species, as well as fungi. This peptide is part of the innate immune system of swine and operates through a carpet-like mechanism, where it disrupts bacterial membranes leading to cell death. PMAP-23 is also known for its immunomodulatory activities, such as inducing cytokine production in porcine epithelial cells, which contributes to the overall immune response. Its ability to neutralize LPS and inhibit LPS-induced cytokine production by macrophages suggests a role in modulating inflammation. Moreover, PMAP-23 and its derivatives are being explored for their potential as natural, alternative antimicrobial agents to combat drug-resistant infections in veterinary medicine.
