Target Information
Streptokinase is a potent extracellular protein secreted by Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus) that acts as a highly specific plasminogen activator. Unlike human tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), SK does not have intrinsic enzymatic activity; instead, it forms a stoichiometric complex with host plasminogen, inducing a conformational change that converts it into active plasmin. This rapid fibrinolysis dissolves blood clots and degrades extracellular matrix proteins, facilitating the systemic spread of the bacteria through host tissues and contributing to invasive diseases like necrotizing fasciitis.
