Target Information
M Protein is the primary virulence factor and major surface protein of Streptococcus pyogenes (GAS). It forms a dense, hair-like fibrillar coating on the bacterial cell wall, characterized by an N-terminal hypervariable region that defines over 200 emm types. Its main function is to inhibit opsonophagocytosis by binding host regulatory proteins like Factor H and C4b-binding protein, thereby degrading C3b. This molecular mimicry and high antigenic variation allow GAS to evade the host immune system and colonize mucosal surfaces.
