Target Information
Staphylokinase is a 136-amino acid extracellular protein produced primarily by lysogenic strains of Staphylococcus aureus. It functions as a potent fibrin-specific plasminogen activator, forming a 1:1 complex with plasminogen to catalyze the formation of active plasmin. This activity facilitates tissue invasion by dissolving fibrin clots and degrading the extracellular matrix. Additionally, Sak promotes immune evasion by neutralizing host $\alpha$-defensins, making it a key virulence factor in skin infections and a significant target for thrombolytic research.
