Target Information
Salmonella Typhi is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped, facultative anaerobic bacterium and the obligate human pathogen responsible for typhoid fever. Unlike non-typhoidal Salmonella strains, S. Typhi is systemic, invading the intestinal mucosa and disseminating through the bloodstream to colonize the liver, spleen, bone marrow, and gallbladder. Key targets for clinical diagnostics, molecular surveillance, and vaccine design include the Vi capsular polysaccharide antigen (which prevents phagocytosis), the lipopolysaccharide O9 antigen, the flagellar d-H antigen, and the typhoid toxin, a unique structural A2B5 exotoxin that mediates cellular damage and systemic disease manifestations.
