Target Information
Rabbit Matrix Gla Protein (MGP) is a small vitamin K-dependent protein that plays a crucial role in inhibiting ectopic calcification and regulating bone formation. MGP is expressed in various tissues, including cartilage, heart, kidneys, and blood vessels. In rabbits, as in other mammals, MGP acts as a potent inhibitor of vascular calcification by binding to calcium and hydroxyapatite crystals, preventing their deposition in the arterial wall. It also modulates the activity of Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 (BMP-2), preventing the differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells into osteoblasts. Additionally, MGP is involved in chondrocyte survival and differentiation during endochondral ossification, with its expression being essential for proper cartilage and bone development. Its multifunctional nature makes MGP an important factor in maintaining tissue health and preventing pathological calcification.
