Target Information

VAR2CSA is a unique member of the PfEMP1 protein family specifically expressed by Plasmodium falciparum during pregnancy. Unlike other PfEMP1 variants, it does not bind CD36; instead, it mediates the sequestration of infected erythrocytes in the placenta by binding to Chondroitin Sulfate A (CSA) on syncytiotrophoblasts. This interaction leads to placental malaria, causing severe complications like low birth weight and maternal anemia. Due to its conserved function and critical role in pregnancy-associated pathology, VAR2CSA is a leading candidate for maternal malaria vaccines.
