Target Information
PfEMP1 is a high-molecular-weight protein family exported by Plasmodium falciparum to the surface of infected red blood cells (iRBCs). Encoded by approximately 60 var genes, it undergoes antigenic variation to evade host immunity. PfEMP1 mediates cytoadherence by binding host receptors such as CD36, ICAM-1, or EPCR, causing iRBCs to sequester in microvasculature. This process prevents splenic clearance and is a primary driver of severe malaria pathology, including cerebral malaria and pregnancy-associated malaria.
