Target Information
Mouse X-Box-Binding Protein 1 (Xbp1) is a key transcription factor involved in the unfolded protein response (UPR) and regulation of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. It exists in two forms: the unspliced form (XBP1u) and the spliced form (XBP1s). Under ER stress, the IRE1α enzyme splices XBP1 mRNA to produce the active transcription factor XBP1s, which migrates to the nucleus and induces the transcription of genes involved in ER chaperones, folding enzymes, and ER-associated protein degradation (ERAD) to alleviate ER stress. XBP1s also plays roles in lipid and glucose metabolism, immune responses, and synaptic function. In neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, XBP1s overexpression can reduce amyloid burden and restore synaptic plasticity.
