Target Information
Mouse Vascular Cell Adhesion Molecule 1 (VCAM1) is a glycoprotein expressed primarily on endothelial cells and plays a critical role in leukocyte-endothelial adhesion during inflammation. VCAM1 is induced by pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-1, and its expression is upregulated in conditions like atherosclerosis, autoimmune diseases, and cancer. VCAM1 mediates the binding of leukocytes to endothelial cells, facilitating their migration into tissues during inflammatory responses. It is also involved in the pathophysiology of diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), where elevated VCAM1 levels correlate with disease activity, oxidative stress, and inflammatory markers like ESR and CRP. In RA patients, VCAM1 is associated with endothelial dysfunction, which contributes to increased cardiovascular risk. VCAM1 has also been implicated in tumor metastasis and the progression of cardiovascular diseases. Its expression is regulated by factors such as reactive oxygen species, hyperglycemia, and shear stress. VCAM1 may serve as a therapeutic target in diseases like RA, where anti-VCAM1 antibodies have shown promise in reducing disease severity.
