Target Information
In mice, Serum Amyloid A-1 Protein (Saa1) is a major acute-phase protein produced by hepatocytes in response to inflammatory stimuli such as IL-1β, IL-6, and LPS. Saa1 plays a crucial role in the acute-phase response (APR), where it is rapidly released into the bloodstream and associates with HDL, displacing Apo A-1. It has pro-inflammatory properties, inducing chemotaxis of immune cells and the expression of cytokines like IL-6. Saa1 also has anti-inflammatory effects, promoting the development of M2 macrophages and enhancing efferocytosis. Additionally, Saa1 has been implicated in various diseases, including cancer, where it can promote tumor metastasis and immune cell infiltration. In atherosclerosis models, Saa1 increases LDL retention and vascular biglycan content. In obesity models, Saa1 deficiency reduces weight gain and macrophage accumulation. Overall, Saa1 is a multifunctional protein with diverse roles in inflammation, immune regulation, and disease progression.
