Target Information
In mice, Pro-Neuropeptide Y (Npy) is a precursor protein that gives rise to the active neuropeptide Y (NPY), a 36-amino acid peptide with diverse functions. NPY is widely expressed in the central nervous system and plays key roles in regulating feeding behavior, energy homeostasis, and stress responses. In the hypothalamus, NPY neurons increase food intake and decrease energy expenditure, while also controlling the activity of pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons, which have the opposite effects. NPY has neuroprotective effects, reducing neuroinflammation and promoting neuronal survival in conditions like Parkinson's disease and Machado-Joseph disease. Additionally, NPY influences cardiovascular health by modulating cardiac contractility and vascular functions.
