Target Information
Mouse Peripheral Myelin Protein 22 (Pmp22) is a tetraspan membrane glycoprotein crucial for peripheral nerve myelin formation and maintenance. It is highly expressed in myelinating Schwann cells and plays a key role in the organization of myelin sheaths. Pmp22 is involved in liquid-liquid phase separation, which is essential for nucleolus formation and ribosome biogenesis. It also interacts with the extracellular matrix, specifically with laminin and integrins, to stabilize axon-Schwann cell contacts and initiate myelination. Proper levels of Pmp22 are critical, as both overexpression and underexpression can lead to inherited neuropathies, such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.
