Target Information
In mice, Parathyroid Hormone (Pth) is a key hormone produced by the parathyroid glands in response to low serum calcium levels. It targets bones and kidneys to increase calcium levels. Pth stimulates bone resorption by osteoclasts and enhances calcium reabsorption in the kidneys. In bone, Pth has dual effects: continuous exposure is catabolic, while intermittent administration (iPth) is anabolic, promoting bone formation. This anabolic effect is used clinically to treat osteoporosis. Pth is also crucial for fetal development, with Pth-deficient mice showing reduced bone mineralization. In research, Pth is used to study bone metabolism, calcium homeostasis, and related diseases.
