Target Information
Mouse Occludin (Ocln) is a tetraspanin membrane protein and a key component of tight junctions (TJs) in epithelial and endothelial cells. It has four transmembrane domains, two extracellular loops, and one intracellular loop, with its N- and C-termini projecting into the cytoplasm. Occludin's extracellular loops interact with those of adjacent cells to form TJs, which are crucial for maintaining cellular barrier functions. In mouse models, Occludin is essential for TJ integrity in certain tissues like gastric glands and salivary glands. However, Occludin-deficient mice can still form normal TJs in the intestinal epithelium, suggesting tissue-specific roles. Occludin also regulates paracellular permeability and interacts with proteins like ZO-1, ZO-2, and ZO-3 to link to the cytoskeleton.
