Target Information
In mice, Nitric Oxide Synthase, Inducible (Nos2) is a key enzyme that produces nitric oxide (NO), playing a central role in immune responses and inflammation. Nos2 is induced by pro-inflammatory stimuli such as lipopolysaccharide and cytokines, and it generates large amounts of NO. This NO helps defend against pathogens by killing them and is critical for the inflammatory response and innate immunity. However, excessive NO production can cause tissue damage and contribute to diseases like septic shock and cardiac dysfunction. Nos2 is also involved in cancer progression, where it can either promote tumor growth or act as a tumor suppressor, depending on the context. Additionally, Nos2 has been studied in neuroinflammatory conditions and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Its dual roles in both beneficial and harmful processes make it a valuable target for therapeutic interventions in various medical conditions.
