Target Information
Mouse Kallikrein-4 (Klk4) is a serine protease that plays a critical role in dental enamel formation. It is predominantly expressed in the maturation stage of amelogenesis, where it degrades residual enamel matrix proteins following the cessation of enamel protein secretion. Klk4 is secreted by ameloblasts during the transition and maturation stages, facilitating the removal of organic matrix and allowing enamel crystals to fully mineralize and harden. Mutations in Klk4 are associated with autosomal recessive amelogenesis imperfecta, a condition characterized by soft, porous enamel with residual protein. Klk4's function is essential for the final stages of enamel maturation, ensuring the enamel layer becomes harder and less porous. In mouse models, Klk4 has been studied for its role in enamel protein degradation and its implications in dental diseases.
