Target Information
In mice, Haptoglobin (Hp) is an acute-phase plasma protein primarily synthesized in the liver. It binds free hemoglobin released during intravascular hemolysis, forming stable complexes that are cleared by CD163 receptors on macrophages, limiting oxidative damage. Additionally, Hp plays a role in immune regulation, supporting B-cell maturation and antibody production. Studies show that Hp-deficient mice exhibit reduced immune responses and impaired lymphoid organ development. Hp also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties and is involved in iron recycling and metabolic regulation. In disease models, Hp has been implicated in conditions such as hemolytic disorders and metabolic diseases, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic target.
