Target Information

Mouse Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is an intermediate filament protein expressed in glial cells, particularly astrocytes, in the central nervous system. It serves as a marker for astrocytes and is involved in maintaining their structural integrity. GFAP provides mechanical support to astrocytes, helping them form the blood-brain barrier and facilitate nutrient exchange between neurons and blood vessels. It is upregulated in response to central nervous system injuries, leading to astrogliosis. GFAP is used as a diagnostic tool in neurological conditions such as tumors and multiple sclerosis.
