Target Information
Mouse Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 (Fgf23) is a hormone that plays a critical role in regulating phosphate and vitamin D metabolism. It is synthesized in bone cells and acts on the kidneys to reduce serum phosphate levels by inhibiting renal proximal tubular phosphate reabsorption and decreasing the production of active vitamin D (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D). Fgf23 also influences calcium and sodium handling in the distal nephron. Deficiencies in Fgf23 can lead to hyperphosphatemia and ectopic calcifications, while excess Fgf23 activity is associated with hypophosphatemic diseases such as X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets and tumor-induced osteomalacia. Fgf23 has also been implicated in chronic kidney disease and diabetic kidney disease, where elevated levels predict disease progression. Additionally, Fgf23 may regulate bone mineralization and hematopoiesis, making it a potential therapeutic target in disorders related to phosphate metabolism and bone health.
