Target Information
Mouse Butyrophilin Subfamily 1 Member A1, or BTN1A1, is a protein expressed in mammary cells, associated with milk fat globule formation. In mouse models, BTN1A1 is used to study mammary gland development and milk secretion mechanisms. BTN1A1 plays a critical role in the assembly and secretion of milk fat globules, which are essential components of breast milk providing energy and nutrients to neonates. The protein is involved in the formation of the milk fat globule membrane by interacting with other proteins such as xanthine oxidoreductase and lactadherin. Research on BTN1A1 also extends to understanding its potential roles in immune regulation within the mammary gland, as members of the butyrophilin family have been implicated in modulating immune cell functions. Furthermore, studying BTN1A1 in different physiological states, such as during pregnancy and lactation, helps in elucidating the molecular basis of mammary gland biology and in developing strategies to improve milk quality and yield in livestock.
