Target Information

Hemagglutinin (HA), encoded by the A56R gene, is a major type I transmembrane glycoprotein found on the surface of infected cells and the extracellular enveloped virus (EEV). It plays a multifunctional role in viral pathogenesis, including binding to host cell sialic acid for attachment and interacting with viral proteins K2 and VCP to modulate the complement system and prevent superinfection. As a non-essential but highly immunogenic protein, A56R is frequently used as a diagnostic marker for phylogenetic analysis and as a target in developing anti-orthopoxvirus therapies.
