Target Information

The D14L protein, also known as MOPICE, is a critical virulence factor secreted by the Monkeypox virus. It functions as a complement control protein that inhibits the host's innate immune response by binding to and accelerating the decay of C3b and C4b convertases. Unlike the Variola virus ortholog (SPICE), D14L contains distinct amino acid substitutions that modulate its potency. Targeting D14L is a primary focus for developing therapeutics to restore complement-mediated viral clearance during infection.
