Target Information
Lyme disease is a multi-systemic zoonotic illness caused primarily by the spirochete bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and transmitted via Ixodes ticks. The pathogen dynamically alters its outer membrane proteome to transition between vector and mammalian hosts. Essential targets for diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccine development include major surface lipoproteins such as Outer Surface Protein A (OspA), which mediates tick midgut attachment, and OspC, Decorin-binding protein A (DbpA), and VlsE, which are critical for mammalian tissue dissemination and immune evasion.
